GMOD is the Generic Model Organism Database project, a collection of open source software tools for creating and managing genome-scale biological databases. You can use it to create a small laboratory database of genome annotations, or a large web-accessible community database. http://gmod.org/wiki/Main_Page
The Distributed Annotation System (DAS) defines a communication protocol used to exchange annotations on genomics or protein sequences. It is motivated by the idea that such annotations should not be provided by single centralized databases, but should instead be spread over multiple sites. Data distribution, performed by DAS servers, is separated from visualization, which is done by DAS clients. http://useast.ensembl.org/info/docs/das/index.html
